The difference between Cruelty-free & Vegan

Vegan vs Cruelty-free

At Skincare with Compassion we have a strong commitment to animal welfare and want to help people understand different topics. Today we are focusing on the difference between Cruelty-free and Vegan products.

Some people believe that if a product is Cruelty-free then it must also be Vegan, unfortunately though this is not the case. There is a clear distinction between the two.

What is meant by a Vegan product?

Vegan skincare products do not contain any animal ingredients, or ingredients derived from an animal. This means that products are completely free from ingredients such as Carmine, Honey, Lanolin, Collagen, Beeswax, Gelatine and much more.

What is meant by a Cruelty-free product?

Cruelty-free skincare products are not tested on animals at any stage of the production process.  This means that the ingredients and the actual product itself is completely free from animal testing. (The term ‘Cruelty-free’ can become quite complicated to explain which is why we will be launching a separate blog post on this shortly but for now we are keeping things simple for this article).

How to know if a product is Cruelty-free & Vegan

Cruelty-free - companies can claim anything on product labels which is why a recognised certification is so important to have on product labels.

To know if a product is 100% Cruelty-free, we recommend looking for the Leaping Bunny logo show below:

Cruelty-free skincare

This logo is given by Cruelty-free International which is the only trusted company to provide Cruelty-free certification. Companies who carry this logo have gone through rigorously high standards to achieve this which gives people the confidence to know that the product is completely free from animal testing.

Unfortunately some companies use fake bunny logos to hide animal testing which is very misleading to customers. Don't be fooled by this and conduct your own research if buying from a non-certified company. You can also write to the company directly to find out more about their animal-testing policy.

Vegan - to know if a product is Vegan, the most easiest thing to look for is the certification given by the Vegan Society shown below:

This is the only trusted company to give Vegan accreditation and also has strict and thorough standards to achieve this. You can therefore be 100% sure that the product does not contain any form of animal ingredients in the formulation.

Can a product be Cruelty-free / Vegan without Certification?

Yes.  Companies are not required to carry certification on their packaging and can still be Cruelty-free / Vegan.

At Skincare with Compassion it is important to us that our customers can be confident in purchasing from a certified Cruelty-free and Vegan company which is why we carry both certifications.  We believe that companies shouldn't carry one certification without the other.  Our customers therefore know that they are not contributing to any form of animal testing or using animal derived ingredients from using our natural skincare products.
